Understanding Pet Nutrition Labels
Decoding Pet Food Labels
Pet food labels contain a wealth of information, but they can be confusing. Here's how to understand what you're really feeding your pet.
Ingredient List
Ingredients are listed by weight. The first 3-5 ingredients make up the majority of the food. Look for named meat sources (chicken, beef, salmon) as the first ingredient.
Guaranteed Analysis
This shows minimum percentages of protein and fat, and maximum percentages of fiber and moisture. Dogs need at least 18% protein and cats need at least 26%.
By-Products: Good or Bad?
Meat by-products aren't necessarily bad — they can include nutritious organ meats. However, unnamed by-products ("meat by-products") are lower quality than named ones ("chicken by-products").
Fillers and Additives
Some fillers like beet pulp and rice hulls are actually beneficial fiber sources. Avoid artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
Life Stage Appropriateness
Ensure the food is appropriate for your pet's life stage — growth (puppy/kitten), maintenance (adult), or senior.
